With Final Fantasy X-2, Square-Enix did something they had never done before in the Final Fantasy series: release a direct sequel. Unlike the other games, which mostly just shared creatures, basic mechanics, and themes, X-2 shared its entire world with Final Fantasy X. It featured many of the same characters and places, as well as some new ones, and happened only two years later.
Story
The story has fairly little in common with the first game. Yuna has abandoned her quiet summoner ways and instead joined a sphere-hunting group, the Gullwings, alongside Rikku and a new character named Paine. Yuna recieves a video sphere which seems to be showing Tidus, and investigates. Meanwhile, she has dreams about a long-dead couple, Shuyin and Lenne, except that they're replaced in her dreams with herself and Tidus. This is eventually revealed to be a side-effect of using the songstress dressphere, which contains Lenne's spirit. Rather than finding Tidus, Yuna finds Shuyin attempting to seek revenge on the world from within the Farplane.
Gameplay
Final Fantasy X-2 is one big minigame. You will spend most of your time doing random things with no bearing on the plot, especially if you want to get a 100% completion rating. Your completion rating effects which version of the ending you see when you beat the game. Fortunately, when you beat the game, you can play it again with your skills intact, and keep all the completion points you earned the first time through. If you miss something important, you get another chance, so 100% is a realistic goal.
If you do choose to stick to just the main storyline, you'll find that battle has changed dramatically from previous Final Fantasy games. You have one three-member party which does not change as you go through the game. Everything happens in real time, so all your characters can be attacking at once. The class/job system from the older games is back in the form of garment grids and dresspheres, but now you can change your character's class in the middle of battle.
Controversy
This game was bound to draw lots of criticism. The trademark complex plot that made the Final Fantasy series famous is nowhere to be found in this game. Yuna and Rikku have mostly done away with clothing, and Yuna in particular does not seem to be anything like the same person that she was in Final Fantasy X. Additionally, being the first direct sequel, this was the first game in which inconsistancies with other games could be pointed out. (A space for listing these can be found here.) Finally, the overall feel of the game is radically different from that of previous ones. That was done on purpose, and fans of X-2 say that the change is actually its greatest strength. Still, some people are going to be disappointed with any major change in an established series.
